Martin Luther King Day is a US holiday marking the birth date of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, and occurs on the third Monday of January each year, around the time of King’s birthday, January 15. It is one of four US holidays to commemorate an individual person.

King was the chief spokesman for non-violent activism in the civil rights movement, which successfully protested racial discrimination in federal and state law. He was assassinated in 1968.
The campaign for a federal holiday in King’s honor began soon after his assassination. Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law in 1983, and it was first observed in 1986. At first, some states resisted observing the holiday as such, giving it alternative names or combining it with other holidays. It was officially observed in all 50 states for the first time in 2000.

Martin Luther King Day was founded as a holiday promoted by labor unions in contract negotiations. After King’s death, United States Representative John Conyers (D-Michigan) introduced a bill in Congress to make King’s birthday a national holiday. The bill first came to a vote in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1979. However, it fell five votes short of the number needed for passage. Two of the main arguments mentioned by opponents were that a paid holiday for federal employees would be too expensive, and that a holiday to honor a private citizen would be contrary to longstanding tradition (King had never held public office). Soon after, The King Center turned to support from the corporate community and the general public. The success of this strategy was cemented when musician Stevie Wonder released the single “Happy Birthday” to popularize the campaign in 1980 and hosted the Rally for Peace Press Conference in 1981. Six million signatures were collected for a petition to Congress to pass the law, termed by a 2006 article in The Nation as “the largest petition in favour of an issue in U.S. history.”
At the White House Rose Garden on November 2, 1983, United States President Ronald Reagan signed a bill, proposed by Representative Katie Hall of Indiana, creating a federal holiday to honor King. It was observed for the first time on January 20, 1986.
The bill established the Martin Luther King Federal Holiday Commission to oversee observance of the holiday, and Coretta Scott King was made a member of this commission for life by United States President George H. W. Bush in May, 1989.

Popstar to Operastar’s youngest competitor has had seven No.1 singles with McFly – but admits he’s found opera training tricky. “It’s been really hard, I’ve got lots of bad habits,” he says. “But the singing coaches here have been brilliant. The other day, as part of my training, I was lying on the floor doing sit-ups while singing. It was wild!”

Danny confesses that before entering this competition, he didn’t know his aria from his elbow. “I didn’t have a clue about opera,” he admits. “I’m not bothered about the critics. I’m doing this for the experience and because I think it’ll be fun. I don’t want to be too serious on this show. I won’t start crying if I don’t get through!”

For Vanessa White from The Saturdays, being introduced to the world of opera has been a revelation. “Opera is so relaxing,” says the singer. “Some people think it’s just for old people, but it appeals to everyone. Opera music is universal.”
The singer, whose band has toured with both Girls Aloud and Take That, confesses that working on the show has been a steep learning curve. “Singing opera is completely different from singing pop. You have to learn a whole new style of performance. In pop, you use your head voice, while in opera it comes from the stomach.

Appearing on Popstar to Operastar feels like coming home for Darius. “It really appealed because my parents are huge opera fans. I fell in love with opera at a very young age because my dad always played it in the car.” As a youngster, Darius dabbled in the world of opera when he appeared in the Scottish Opera production of The Trojans.

From there he had to decide whether or not to pursue a career in opera – but finally decided to go to university instead. Little did he know he’d get the opportunity to revisit his old dream, thanks to Popstar to Operastar. “It’s been a shock to find there’s a world of technique and military discipline and work ethic out there that exceeds anything in pop,” says Darius. Looks like the singer has his work cut out.

American Marcella, who enjoyed many years of hits with the pop duo Shakespears Sister, could not resist the offer to join the show. “It’s so exciting,” she enthuses. “It’s such a great opportunity to be trained by these fantastic vocal coaches. I’ve always loved opera.”
The 57-year-old says she has already got so much out of the singing lessons. “As a pop singer, you slip into bad habits. You get into postures that don’t work so well for opera and place things differently in your throat. The physicality required to sing opera is very challenging.”

Kym can’t wait to get in to her glad rags for the live shows. “You can be sure I’ll be wearing something glamorous,” laughs the singer, actress and mother-of-two. “You can’t sing opera in a pair of jeans. I spend enough time in tracksuits looking after the kids and going back and forth to Corrie. I love getting dressed up!”

The biggest challenge for Kym has been attempting to sing in a foreign language. “I’m finding that very hard,” she says. “I can’t even speak my own language – I’m constantly being pulled up for my grammar. You never know, after doing this show, I might take up a foreign language!”

Blur bassist Alex is ready for a change of scene. “Pop music is about running away and getting the girl, and I’ve done that,” he says. “OK, I’ve done what you told me to do – what do I do now? That’s when I started listening to classical music. I heard the William Tell Overture and thought, ‘That sounds amazing!’ Suddenly a new world of music opened up for me.”

However, Alex hasn’t found opera singing straightforward. “The hardest thing is trying to do everything at once,” he muses. “You’re simultaneously trying to concentrate on singing, breathing, meaning and acting. The definition of something complicated is lots of simple things happening very quickly at the same time.”
